Salmonella Linked to Diamond Pet Food

While we monitor the brands of food affected by the latest pet food recall, one clue has apparently emerged. A small number of cases of a relatively rare form of salmonella infection has been linked to the recently recalled Diamond formulas.

Since last Fall, there have been 14 reports of Salmonella infantis diagnosed in 9 states. This is the same strain confirmed in the Diamond foods recalled from the Gaston, SC manufacturing plant.

According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), Salmonella infantis is relatively rare. The diagnosed illnesses were linked to the recalled food by comparing the DNA of the bacteria found in the food with that isolated in the affected individuals.

Four of the people diagnosed with Salmonella infantis indicated that they had come in contact with Diamond dog food.

The infections were reported in Missouri, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, North Carolina and Alabama.
