Pet Food Recalls Expand from Diamond Plant

The list of foods recalled from the Diamond manufacturing plant in South Carolina continues to grow. In the past week, Kirkland Signature, Canidae, Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover’s Soul, Natural Balance, Solid Gold, Taste of the Wild, and Wellness all have issued limited recalls for foods manufactured in Gaston, SC.

Last month, Diamond announced it was closing its plant in Gaston, South Carolina. The closure resulted from a production run that had “the potential to be contaminated with salmonella”. The company has confirmed that one of its own formulas did test positive for salmonella.

All of the foods affected by the recall have specific date runs and manufacturing codes printed on the bags. The distribution of these foods was limited to the east coast and Alaska. None have been distributed in Washington state.

There is a simple way to check whether a food falls within the recall guidelines. For all brands except Natural Balance, follow these 3 steps:

  1. Does the formula and size appear on the recall list?
  2. Does the “best by” date code match the recall list?
  3. Does an “X” appear in the 10th or 11th position of the manufacturing code?

If you answer no to any of the questions above, your food has not been recalled. If you answer yes to all questions above, carefully confirm the full manufacturing code included in the recall list.

Natural Balance has specific lot runs with different coding which appears on this list.

Wellness formulas appear on this list.

Solid Gold formulas appear on this list.

Since Smiley Dog handles some of the formulas (but not the production runs) that have issued limited recalls, we’re continuing to monitor each announcement very closely. Each announcement thus far has confirmed that the affected foods are limited to east coast distribution.

The updated list of foods affected by the recall can be found here.
