Pet Owners Tax Deduction Introduced
A bill has been introduced in the House of Representatives which would allow a $3500 income tax deduction for pet care expenses. Introduced by Thadeus McCotter (R-MI), HR 3501, the Humanity and Pets Partnered Through the Years (HAPPY) Bill, is currently in the House Ways and Means committee awaiting debate.
Major Changes at King County Animal Shelter
King County announced this month that their Animal Shelter would close by Nov. 1 and animal control services would be transferred to other agencies by June 30, 2010. Citing budget constraints and criticism over operational problems, the county intends to investigate non-profit shelter options and municipal alternatives for enforcement. Pet Microchip Website
A search engine for pet ID microchips was announced by the American Animal Hospital Association this month. Last month we mentioned Chloe Standard had begun development of a universal scanner for pet ID microchips.
The AAHA site includes registries for four of the 7 major chips on the market, including AKC CAR, HomeAgain, Petlink by Datamars and ResQ by Bayer. The non-participating chips are AVID, Banfield and 24PetWatch.

Merrick pet food has announced their Whole Earth Farms line. Pricing has not yet been announced but we expect to be able to add this to our “Value Line” of offerings. Our value line foods sell for less than $1.25/ pound, and currently includes FirstMate Skoki, NutriSource, and Native . Value Line foods are an alternative to premium quality and priced foods.
Raw Advantage has announced a “chunk style” of their organic Chicken, Turkey, Beef and Beef & Veggie formulas.
NutriSource Pet Food– another affordable, high quality food line. Available in Chicken (35#- $42.50) or Lamb (35#- $46.50). Senior and cat formulas also available.
DeliFresh- a fresh, refrigerated fresh alternative to canned food. Available in Chicken or Turkey formulas, slice and serve or fresh bite pouches.
