Natura Recall Expands Again

UPDATE 4/23/12:

After speaking directly to the manufacturer, the reason behind this expansion has become a bit clearer. It was done to eliminate confusion now that new procedures have been put in place to test for salmonella before product leaves the manufacturing facility.

While it would have been better had this policy been in place earlier, better late than never?

Procter & Gamble, the parent company of Natura, has announced a second, extremely broad, expansion of the recall announced last month. This expansion now includes ALL dry Natura formulas including California Natural, Evo, Innova, Healthwise and Karma foods. Canned foods, treats and Mother Nature products are not affected.

This latest recall, announced on the afternoon of April 19, includes every dry food product from the above brands with an expiration date prior to and including March 24, 2014.

We’re glad to see P&G taking steps to ensure the safety of their products. We’re troubled by the way this recall has unfolded over the past few weeks.

This was initially announced as a precautionary recall which affected a small number of products produced in an expanded P&G manufacturing facility located in Fremont, Nebraska. On March 18, when the first recall was issued, the potential for Salmonella contamination was cited as the reson for the recall. The company reported that they had “fully investigated and identified the cause of the incident.”

The Fremont plant is the original manufacturing facility used for production prior to P&G’s  purchase of Natura in 2010. It has since been expanded to accommodate increased production.

The word from P&G now is that all Natura dry foods are being recalled to eliminate any source of confusion. This latest notice cites an “expanding scope” of the recall, but does not identify a reason. The company could not be reached for further information this weekend.

We’d really like to see further disclosure of the reasons behind the recall expansion. We’d also like an explanation of how an isolated manufacturing issue in one plant may have affected a second location.

Those of you who have received, or are scheduled to receive deliveries of affected product have been contacted. There are many alternatives available which we’ll be happy to discuss with you. Perhaps now may be a fine time to consider adding a raw or dehydrated product like Honest Kitchen to your dog’s diet.

The official announcement of this latest expansion can be found on the company’s website.
