WellPet has announced a recall on all Wellness canned cat formulas with “Best By” dates of April 14, 2013 through September 30, 2013. In addition, all lots and sizes of Wellness canned Chicken & Herring cat formula with “Best By’ dates of November 19, 2013 and November 17, 2013 are included in this recall.
The food is being recalled because testing showed that some of these lots may have inadequate levels of Thiamine (vitamin B1)..
Thiamine is an essential vitamin for cats. Early signs of thiamine deficiency may include decreased appetite, salivation, vomiting, and weight loss. If treated promptly, thiamine deficiency is normally reversible. In advanced cases, neurologic signs can develop, which may include ventriflexion (bending towards the floor) of the neck, wobbly walking, circling, falling, and seizures. If your cat has consumed the recalled lots and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.
The recall press release and a letter from the CEO can be found on the company’s website.
