Driving around town bringing smiles to pets and people is always enjoyable. One of the nicest perks of a day often comes from a quick chat with a client who happens to be at home when a delivery is made.
So it came as an unexpected surprise this week to find not only a friendly face at the delivery address for a new client, but a unique small business- the Seattle Cat Hotel.
Nestled off the road in the residential neighborhood of Mount Baker, Carleen Cafferty opened the facility in 2011. The business is inspected and licensed by the Seattle and King County Department of Public Health.
Walking through the wooden gate into the back yard, it becomes immediately apparent that this is not a typical “boarding facility.” A double gated, rectangular wire mesh enclosure surrounds an outdoor area affectionately referred to as the catio. Felines have free run from the catio to the adjacent indoor area.
Walking inside, my eye was drawn to the ceiling where Theo, a surefooted feline, was making his way across a sprinkler pipe before hopping over to a window sill next to an enclosure. All eight individual enclosures are a generous size to allow for bedding, toys, food and water. The residents spend their evenings here, with easy access to their choice of litter boxes in the vicinity.
Also quite noticeable was the complete absence of odor both inside and outside. Litter is provided and cleaned regularly at the Seattle Cat Hotel. Guests are requested to supply their cat’s favorite food and treats.
